Carl is not amused.

“What the fuck happened here?” he yells as he steps into the room. “Goddamn, it smells like a sewer in here.” He stares at Tess before turning to Mary. “What happened to your face?”

“Billy,” Tess tells him in a calm voice. “He wanted us to…” She doesn’t finish before Carl bolts out of the room.

“Billy Grandholm, what the fuck did you do, you son of a bitch?” he yells as he moves away from the room. Mary looks at her sister with fear in her eyes but Tess is almost eerily calm.

“If he kills him, we’re off the hook.” She cocks an eyebrow but Mary doesn’t laugh.

“That’s not funny, Tess,” she says quietly.

“I’m not trying to be funny.” She turns when they hear a loud banging and more yelling. Mary turns to her sister again.

“It doesn’t sound good.”

“No, it doesn’t.” The banging stops but the screaming continues, muted now, as if the discussion moved into another room from the hall, which Mary assumes is what happened. Finally, the screaming turns to yelling and then to loud talking before it ends completely and the girls hear footsteps, loud ones, coming toward the room in the hallway. Carl turns the corner and is almost startled to see them again.

“Okay, so that’s never going to happen again,” he says to neither of them. “Fucking hell, is the bed ruined?”

“I think we can save it but you might want to think about buying a new mattress soon,” Tess tells him. He looks at her, his eyes wild and his breathing labored. “Did you hit him?”

“Billy? No, he’s not worth the effort, the little fucking shit. I did tell him that he’s never to touch either of you again, not in the bathroom, not anywhere. He ever looks at you, I will break his neck.” He’s looking at Mary as he talks, scaring her but thrilling her as well. “Let’s get you out of those tethers and I’ll take you out back and hose you both off.”

Mary looks at Tess who cocks an eyebrow, shrugs, and shakes her head as if to silently ask, What can you do? Mary just sags and nods.

What, indeed?
